Highlights: Catching fish and swimming on a slow boat ride to Paraty, Flash flooding in Paraty
The rain didn’t stop all night and we are informed that Sao Paulo is under water which might cause problems in a few days. I got my pushups out of the way early and vowed to not say ‘mine’ for at least the next two days.

Highlights: Ilha Grande Prison ruins, National park hike, ocean swimming
Kelly, Karen, Emma, Gareth and I got up early and went out to the old prison ruins undertaking a short 50-55 minute hike which was worth it to experience the rain forest on the island.

Highlights: Caipirinha (strong alcoholic drink), enjoying local football match viewing party, drinking beers under the stars
Getting up late, around 9.30 am, we packed up and left Rio with our new friends. We caught a private mini bus to a crossing point to Ilha Grande Island. The bus ride took about 2 hours during which time the group really started to get to know each other.

Highlights: Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana beach, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, meeting the tour group members
Our overnight flight from Miami got in at 11 am without any significant problems. I had allocated us exit row seats which helped Andrew with his knees not bumping into the front seat but hurt me as we had a bulk head (I couldn’t extend me feet).

Highlights: Last minute Brazilian Visa Success!
We got up late (8.50 am) and headed down for breakfast which was packed with people. After breakfast I went for a short walk to get my steps up while Andrew caught up with his e-mail.

Highlights: Brooklyn Bridge, St Paul’s Chapel, National Museum of the American Indian, New York Cinema experience
We caught a train to Brooklyn in order to walk back to Manhattan over the famous Brooklyn Bridge. We actually got the idea from Sex and the City Movie (embarrassing I know) but the views were fantastic and we picked a great clear day to do this. We watched a youth group holding onto each other blindfolded in what I assume was a trust exercise.

Highlights: Exploring Central Park, ‘Avenue Q’ Show
Today was fairly relaxed, well it was after we found the answer to the question how many Aussies does it take to turn on a shower, well we still don’t know the answer other than one American hotel staff member.

Highlights: Ripley’s Believe it or Not!, ‘Chicago‘ Broadway Show
Having made the decision to stay in NYC and wait for our Brazil visas I stayed up last night making the necessary changes. At around 1 pm I woke suddenly, check out was noon and we were late. Well it kicked us into high gear and 30 minutes later had checked out and we didn’t forget anything.

Highlights: Central Park, Central Park Zoo, Museum of Modern Art, The Sex Museum, NHL ice hockey match
Today was very big, busy and important. We started with a visit to the Brazilian Embassy hoping to get our visas immediately or by tomorrow so our later tour can go ahead. In the end they could even promise Thursday but Friday should be okay. This puts a potential problem for the South American tour but that is a concern for tomorrow.

Highlights: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, New York Hotdog, Madame Tussaud’s, NBA Game at Madison Square Garden (New York Knicks Vs Orlando Magic )
A crazy busy day as we really got into the swing of travelling saw us head out to the former World Trade Centre site which was mostly under construction nearly 9 years later. From here we walked to Battery Point and caught a ferry across to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
