Highlights: Crossing the Panama Canal, Not getting lost travelling solo.
Today I left the tour group in order to get to Panama City and get a full day to tour the city and the famous Panama Canal before my scheduled flight and return home.

Highlights: Snorkelling in the Pacific.
Today was my only day full day in Santa Catalina and I wanted to make the most of it so I selected an all day snorkelling excursion. Joining me today was James, Robin, Bo and Ivan, or at least that was the plan. At the appointed time James, Robin and myself crossed the small waterway to exit the property and waited for our pick up. We later learned the Bo and Ivan’s alarm didn’t work properly today. The tour operator was keen for their money and tracked them down. This gave us a chance to enjoy breakfast before our activity.

Highlights: Magnificent Santa Catalina beach.
At 8 am we were off on our journey to Santa Catalina by private van. The van was a little on the compact side for a long trip but that soon changed. Unfortunately Rebecca was feeling unwell and 40 minutes into our journey we pulled over. The only toilet was the local Police Station who let her use their facilities.

Highlights: Outsmarted by monkeys, enjoyable 1.5 hour hike to magnificent waterfall, relaxing Hot Springs.
It’s not often that I learn that monkeys are both smarter and more devious than me.

Highlights: Ride across the ocean, Boquete room next to a river stream.
An easy travel day as our tour group started our migration to the next stop. You can always spot the migratory group with their backpackers and strollers with their looks of “Why am I up so early?” and “What country am I in?” expressions.

Highlights: Swimming in the Caribbean Sea, Wild Water Boat Ride.
Today I ended up swimming and floating in the beautiful warm Caribbean Ocean in the Archipelago of Bocas del Toro 🙂

Highlights: Night Water Taxi with no lights and Festival Time!
After a night listening to the local music played until 3 am today was a day to ‘sleep in’ and enjoy my room overlooking the beautiful ocean. This town is definitely a party town based on last nights activity and the fact almost no one was up doing anything in the morning confirmed the pace was quiet during the day.

Highlights: Long Border Crossing, 50th country visited, Boat ride to our Island.
At 8 am we all assembled on time for our bus ride to the Panama border. Unfortunately the rain started at the same time we walked to the bus stop. Liza got me to ride with the bags in a taxi and I unloaded them and attempted to keep them all dry with some success.

Highlights: Animal Rescue Centre, Organic Ice Cream.
Lisa escorted five members of our group to an Animal Rescue Centre. This centre was established by two individuals who moved to Puerto Viejo from overseas and they met here and then married. As one was a veterinarian the locals kept bringing injuried animals to his house and eventually the couple decided to set up a rescue centre and seek help via volunteers and money to make a real difference. There is no government money so support comes from tourist visits.

Highlights: The Beach at Puerto Viejo, Mountains during bus ride.
An early morning start for the first full day of this tour as we had to be at reception at 5.30 am for a taxi to the bus station. Everyone managed to be on time so that is a good start. Our Tour Leader Lisa organised allocated tickets the night before which was good foresight as people buying tickets on the day had to stand up on this 4 hour bus ride and that would not have been much fun.
