• After the five matches yesterday I wasn’t scheduled for any matches today.

I did get to experience Erin’s excitement that it was Easter and time for chocolate!

    20130401-093625.jpg

This left the rest of the day to enjoy the chocolate and hear about Andrew’s excellent B Grade Singles win from yesterday.

I did get a chance to catch up with the Orton’s in particular playtime with Hannah, Catherine’s young baby girl. She was easy to keep fascinated with my nose and her nose. Baby’s are so cute as they start looking and learning about the world.

I finished the day with a visit to the local Pokies venue with my sister Kara and we both walked away winners after playing a machine together.

  • Today saw me playing 5 sets as I progressed in the D Grade singles to my first final after 12 previous attempts.

    D Grade Singles
Semi Final – Andrew Robertson 8-7 (7-2 tie break)
    Final – Jordan Forbes 3-8

C Grade Doubles (w Leon Roche)
Steve Lloyd / Scott Matheson 7-2
Joe Thorpe / Kyle Baxter 0-7

D Grade Doubles (w Reagan Burgess)
Kieran Robertson / Lindsay Spencer 2-7

The 0-7 loss with Leon in the C Doubles. Was us being totally outclassed by a far superior combination who also are playing B Grade. I was happy with winning the other first match.

Losing the D Doubles match with Reagan was very disappointing. I gave us a good chance of progressing far in the tournament but we were both of during the match. There were 7 sudden death games highlighting how close the match actually was. You only need to be off you game for a few minutes and its all over.

In the singles I won a marathon semi final match to start my day. I won the tie break by a good margin but until the last three points I didn’t believe I would win.

In the final I was beaten by Jordan Forbes who played a clever match rallying for long periods and only when necessary hit ‘hard’ forehand winners. A worthy winner.

After playing this tournament so many times it was a major surprise to do so well, especially given my low fitness levels and lack of game play since my world trip.

Later that night I went to the local pokies venue with my mother and sister and actually won some money! Another surprise.

After playing 51 long games I was still very happy despite not progressing past the group stage in my doubles events πŸ™‚

  • Good Friday saw me back at Myrtleford for the local tennis tournament which I have been attending since 1999. This was a real family affair as I’m staying at a local hotel with my mother (Helen), brother (Jason), sister (Kara), brother-in-law (Jason) and niece (Erin) in a family room with my nephew Andrew and his girlfriend Amber next door.

Today I was scheduled for and 8.30 am kick off which I made easily enough having been woken by Reagan around 7 am. Since returning to Australia I’ve barely won a set but recently I’ve been getting closer and I was feeling better. Still I thought I was only playing singles to get practise on grass for later doubles events.

    My results for the day were surprising;
    Singles D Grade
    Rd 1: James Kelly 8-4
    Rd2: Ben O’Day forfeit win
    QF: Luke Oliver 8-4

    Doubles D Grade (w Reagan)
Group Stage: Killian & Lachan McGregor 7-1

So I ended up winning 4 matches 3 of them on my merits. I did have my main racquet break on me when warming up for the doubles, I swear I didn’t smash it into the fence or ground.

Reagan is playing some really good tennis right now maybe we might progress in the draw for a while.

Today gave my a chance to see my old mixed tennis partner Catherine and her beautiful new baby Hannah :).

Being Good Friday most people try not to eat meat (it’s a Catholic thing) and Reagan and Jason organised orders early however at pick up it was organised (maybe) chaos with most individual’s order missing something 😦

Tennis wise a surprisingly great result day.

  • All world trips should be amazing especially the experiences you have during them however I also love the planning and the remembering aspect of such trips. This blog entry is to help me recall the trip and is Part 4 covering the Sights.

    There are 4 different aspects to my world adventure I’m going to try and document;
    1) The sights – what activities I enjoyed by country (4 parts)
    2) The culture – what I learned about the different cultures, religions and history
    3) The people – the people I travelled with who I remember fondly
    4) Travelling – how I travelled and what I learnt.

    THE SIGHTS
I visited 19 countries during this world trip:
Part 1: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Iceland, England.
Part 2: Germany, Spain, Argentina, Chile
Part 3: Antarctica, USA, Mexico, Cuba
Part 4: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

    14) Belize
Five marvellous days in the tiny country of Belize which I still look back at fondly. New Year’s Eve was spent on Caye Caulker, an island locate in the warm Caribbean waters. The NYE celebrations were very enjoyable as I celebrated with the young crowd with fire works and alcohol. The snorkelling yacht day trip was amazing, swimming with turtles, string-rays and colourful fish.

    15) Guatemala
I visited Guatemala for 8 days in January. Guatemala was my first experience of a homestay in Central America which saw children climbing all over me all night. These kids, and a huge group of others, also got to enjoy destroying a piΓ±ata that Andrea bought. Another particular highlight was the day we travelled on chicken buses were every spot was taken and the conductor jump from seat to seat!

I will always remember the sunset Panajachel, the various colours of reds clashing with the volcanoes against the lake. The stay at the Ecological Lodge in Río Dulce with the wild rainy weather, the invading spider and kayaking against the river was awesome (and hard work). Visiting a volunteer school while there also reminded me how great a lot of people are, and how it isn’t always about ‘self’.

I also got to celebrate my birthday in Guatemala (Antigua) with my previous tour ladder Sid making an appearance as I took a shot of a drink that was on fire! Thanks again to Andrea for organising.

    16) Honduras
The seven days in Honduras was memorable for the extreme weather that stranded our group on Roatan Bay Island for an extra 36 hours as I watched boats crash on the coast. But before that in Copan I visited my last Mayan Ruins, this ancient empire spanning from Mexico to Honduras.

Swimming just off the coast at the Bay Islands was enjoyable has I tried to find away though the coral reef maze. Hysterical of to Gabo for his excellent handling of the difficult problem being caught on the island. Quite a few of our group didn’t enjoy the ferry trip off the island as we got really rocked!

    17) Nicaragua
A quick four day visit to Nicaragua still had a few highlights mostly notably the carriage ride around Granada with Rianne and the stunning sunset at Ometepe.

    18) Costa Rica
One of the most beautiful places on the planet. This gem of a country doesn’t have any military instead spending money on their people with the resulting higher quality of living.

The environment is looked after by the government and the people. Costs are higher than the rest of Central America but still cheap by Australian buying power.

Costa Rica offers lots of nature based activities, the night walk I took in Monteverde saw me a metre from deadly snakes, a place I also zip-lined around and over a forest and though mist flying like superman!

Costa Rica was also the place I saw my first toucan in the wild, and only 5 minutes into the country! I also nearly killed myself white water rafting getting trapped under he raft for a few seconds and falling out at another point :). Costa Rica – do it!

    19) Panama
The ten day stay in Panama started with a border crossing that we had to walk over a bridge for. Panama isn’t a wide country so I ended up swimming in the Pacific and Caribbean oceans with a few days. In Boquete I was outsmarted by a monkey at the hot springs 😦 I also left my group and travelled solo without getting lost to Panama City.

The Panama Canal is an outstanding engineering feat and the city is interesting in it’s own right with a very strong European and USA influences. A lot of locals from neighbouring countries don’t even seen Panama as Central American due to their USA control / influence.

It was with great sadness I left Panama knowing that this amazing adventure was over.

Part 4: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

    10) Antarctica
The most amazing place on the planet that I have ever experienced. The air is crisp, clean and cold, the icebergs have an amazing blue, the penguins mostly ignore us humans with the occasional look of who the hell are you guys! The wildlife live a life very different to the rest of the world, penguins, seals, and whales swim and birds, some that you can barely see since they are so white fly of this vast ice land.

Getting to land on an iceberg and hike to the top was a once in a life time experience. Camping on the Antarctica Continent in the shadow of a glacier near a nest of penguins, can it get any better? Even wearing cold weather gear I was still very cold in the morning πŸ™‚ The landings each day on the islands and the continent were great but watching the crazy people doing the polar plunge and the wild ride back to the ship on the zodiac was the highlight of the trip.

Also I managed to not get sick during the Drake Passage, so I was one happy camper one this 11 day (expensive trip). Antarctica Highlights every single day. I have been blessed to live a life that allowed a trip to this remote part of Earth.

    11) United States of America
I got to visit Washington, New York and Orlando during my 10 days in the USA (plus 1 day in Dallas for my return). I got to show this country with boundless energy and self belief in itself with my mother during late November. The signs of Christmas were everywhere and I got to visit New York stores during the festive season.

The New York day tour showed some much of what I feel is the greatest large city in the world. It was also an emotion time when how tour guide talked about his experiences on September 11 back in 2001 as we visit the World Trade Centre site. This was my third visit to New York City and I feel I will be back there again πŸ™‚

I had been to Washington before and thought I wouldn’t see that much more but I was wrong. The various War Memorials (I wish there were less) and the FDR Memorial being particular highlights. I also enjoyed Universal Studios in Orlando.

    12) Mexico
The country I spent the most time in was Mexico for 24 days; 2 days at Mexico City Airport before going to Cuba, 6 days relaxing in Cancun and 15 days on the G Adventure Mexico Ancient Civilizations Tour. Mexico is a giant of a country and in the central and southern parts I visited full of very friendly people.

The Mayan Ruins was the overall highlight during this time in particular the Monte Alban Ruins (Oaxaca), the forest ruins with the howler monkeys at Palenque and Teotihuacan Ruins. Chichen Itza was disappointing due to the huge crowds. The visiting and diving at the cenotes at Cuzama was a great day, even travelling to them was an experience!

In Cancun swimming in the warm Carribean sea was relaxing and Xcaret Park was very enjoyable.

    13) Cuba
I was only in Cuba for a quick 7 day tour but what a place to visit. The Cubans have such an incredible spirit, at night dancing and singing with such energy. The people aren’t rich in material things but they treasure their families and there is such a feeling of community. The locals I spoke too love their country and way of life and are looking forward to the future with hope as they get more freedoms, but they have a few concerns about becoming too commercial with Starbucks.

Seeing vintage cars mixing with Soviet cars, modern Asian models and horses was an amazing sight. The highlight activity was visiting Cayo Blanco Island on a catamaran and swimming in the Caribbean Sea. Visiting the famous Che Guevara’s mausoleum was an experience, including seeing all the local cadets lining up quietly to pay their respects. His imagine was something I saw all over Cuba and Central America.
