    Highlights: Curio shopping, Ethiopian cuisine

With my upgraded room come an upgraded buffet breakfast at the hostel meaning I was eating in a different spot then the rest of the group. I decided to show off one of my tour t-shirts that I got yesterday which got noticed by people starting their travels. As a result I was quickly reminded that this is a hostel and not a hotel when a German couple invited me to their table to ask questions about overland tours as they correctly guessed I’d just finished one. Hostels are mostly a place for sharing stories across fellow travellers.

I did eventually catch up with the majority of the group at reception and we organised to catch up in nearby Long Street for a final lunch together after and before shopping for souvenirs.

Highlights: Cape Town Landscape, Township Tour, Farewell dinner

The last drive day in the truck and the last full day of the Great African Expedition tour (57 days) that started on 25 November some 56 days ago. It was with mixed feelings I backed my bag and walked down at 6.10 am to the truck for today’s last included breakfast. I’m both happy with the trip and what I’ve experienced and enjoyed but at the same time looking forward to returning home. The good thing is I didn’t have a headache after yesterday’s wine tasting and later that night drinking.

    Highlights: Wine Tasting, Billiards

Today we moved onto Cederberg Mountain which for most of the group would be the last night camping, for me I was booked in hotels or upgraded tenting for this leg so it is not a big deal for me but for others it was time to reflect on the last 2.5 weeks on the road about to come to an end. It took us about 7 hours to get to our destination made a little longer by an issue with the truck that meant we had lunch on the road instead of as planned at our destination.

    Highlights: Getting into South Africa

Today we moved into South Africa the final country of this trip and tour. The landscape started having subtle changes, there were still desert areas but occasionally green patches started and definitely near dams wineries. The dry heat was starting to fade into just heat as the climate slowly changed, still you don’t want to get caught in direct sunlight without water. Just before the border we stopped off for some shopping an got to seeing thatch huts for the locals.

    Highlights: Fish River Canyon

Today we faced a 600 km drive across Namibia. Despite this and the at times very bumpy drive the time appeared to fly as we got to watch the amazing harsh landscape in front of us and the occasional animal that somehow survives in this environment.
