• Well here I am at the 100 day stage of this 154 voyage of exploration.   From tomorrow I believe this is the longest I have ever been away from Australia, and for the first time I’m doing it all by myself. I’ve seen some weird, wonderful and different things during this trip; from bullfighting, to art and culture, to pub crawls, to Mardi Gras, to nature, to bella women.   I’ve met some great people and had a wonderful time with most things working out for me (with one exception in Paris). What have I really learned during this trip so far?   Is it art appreciation (no – but art is wonderful), is it history appreciation (no – already loved history).

No the thing I have really learnt most is about me.   Thanks to heaps of different people, and one person in particular, I’ve starting to lose all the self doubt that I’ve have during my life that has paralysed me and stopped me achieving what I want most. I understand we all have self-doubt and fears.   I ´m also beginning to understand that I can actually relate to people and that I have lead an interesting life and others will appreciate me and my opinions if I give them a chance.   I’m learning to drop the defences and roll with it if someone makes fun of me. I’ve decided to start backing myself a whole lot more from this point on (well I’ve been moving this way for a little while now).

I’ve finally found some direction again.   For those who really know me they know I need goals to attempt to reach to be really happy and I haven ´t really had them for awhile now. I achieved all my earlier life goals, most of them earlier than I thought possible (mostly career and finances), however the real goals, personal growth, relationships etc I’ve backed away from, mostly because of self-doubt and fear of failure.   I now fear not trying a lot more then failure.   If I fail so what, at least I tried. I think you will see a more focused and happy person when I return to Australia.   I know I’ve still have doubts and that at times I’ll fall into old habits but it ´s time to face the future and to start believing in myself and stop making excuses for why I shouldn’t do something. I ´m really happy again, but more importantly I ´m relaxed for the first time in who I am.   I also miss certain people back in Australia including my nephews and niece, home is really were the heart is in my case.

Highlights: Playa de la Concha beach

Today I was determined to make it to the beach as you never know when the next chance might come (maybe in Canada).   The weather has been very cold…… by that I mean 26-27 which is very unusual here.   The overcast conditions kept the beaches manageable and I found a good shot to watch the crowds (well the women anyway).

The Playa de la Concha beach is easily among the best in the world. I also used my time to visited the local Cathedral and say hello to Jesus on the hill again (you never know with I’ll need him on day).   Reading about my next trip also got my attention.   Usually before a new leg I take a day off and relax after arriving, due to my unexpected world cup ticket I had to postpone leaving the Europe leg meaning when I get into Finland it is straight onto a tour.   As a result I have made San Sebastian my relaxation place, although it would have been good to run with the bulls tomorrow but alas I have to say goodbye. I face at least a 13 hour bus drive tomorrow followed the next day by a plane trip to Finland, should be an exhausting 2 days unfortunately.

Highlights: Beautiful beaches, lovely tapas bars

I went out exploring this little gem of a town.   Like Rio this town has a statue of Jesus overlooking the city, judging by the looks on people’s faces I think there is a lot of sinning going on here, wonder what the real Jesus would think 🙂

The coastline of this town is simply to die for, it’s better than anything I’ve seen previously.   The beaches are actually that, beaches with sand (and very hot / beautiful women BTW).

    San Sebastian
    San Sebastian Beach

Mostly I hiked around for the entire day and near the end of the day started reading up on my tour of Russia starting in a few days.   I did however find time to go to a few tapas bars, I’m thinking I like this concept and also I better start watching my weight.

    Highlights: Burgos Cathedral

Travelling today from Madrid to San Sebastian BusAbout had to put on an extra bus as everyone is keen to get to San Sebastian as it is located near the running on the bulls which is currently on.   Unfortunately (or is that fortunately) I learnt that I would miss it all by one day (I’m certain the bulls would run me down).

Highlights: Palacio Real, Cathedral de Nustra Senora de la Almudena

Today I choose to visit the Palacio Real (Spanish Madrid Palace).   In the end I picked a day that had the Spanish King in attendance (which is rare).   I believe he was meeting another head of state but I don ´t know who.   Either way I got to see the regal horses and carriage, quite cool. Next to the Palace (which was closed to the public and had heaps of police etc) was the splendid Cathedral de Nustra Senora de la Almudena.   I spent the rest of the day walking around this city; along the way I visited the El Rastro, which is the city’s main market (I wasn’t impressed).

I have to say that without a doubt Madrid is the most beautiful and clean city I’ve seen in all of Europe, if only I had air conditioning or if the temperature was a little cooler (I struggled at the warm 35c it was today).
