Highlights: St Andrews Cathedral, St Andrews Golf Course
We decided on a day trip to St Andrews. This meant a train trip to Leuchars and than a bus to St Andrews, total travelling time around 1.5 hours.
A real highlight was St Andrews Cathedral built in 1160 it was basically destroyed by the reformation of the church in 1559. It is obvious it was quite magnificent, and several of the surviving parts are exceptional.
St Andrews Castle is in similar condition (actually a little worse). This castle was the home of the bishop. The bishop here had an army and even minted his own currency! Protestants destroyed it during the reformation.
The reason for this visit was to see St Andrews Golf Course. This is the home of the ‘Royal & Ancient Golf Club’ the club that makes the rules of the game. The course & buildings are beautiful. We actually got caught in a snow storm, which was very heavy. Quite a surprise seeing so much snow.
