World Trip 2024-25: Day 21 – Santiago Island (Galapagos Islands), Ecuador

Thursday 19 December 2024
Highlights: Walking on old lave flows, Finding Penguins, Swimming with Sharks, Treking for a great view.

We started today with a visit to Sullivan Bay part of Santiago Island. This area had a major volcano eruption over a hundred years ago. As there is little rain in this area the now hard former lava creates unusual patterns.

We learned a lot about eruptions in the Galapagos and how it has had major impacts on species and their evolution.

Back on the ship we quickly changed for our morning snorkelling activity.

The water was a little rough in places but I got to see penguins and sea turtles making it worthwhile.

After an hour we headed back to our catamaran for a shower before lunch.

In the afternoon there was a second snorkelling session. This time only half the group elected to undertake it.

We went snorkelling in two different locations. The first location had strong currents. I saw a lot of different beautiful fish at this location.

Our second location was when we hit the jackpot. We found white-finned sharks in several locations.

We found penguins, stingrays and sea lions as well. While this was exhausting doing another snorkelling activity it was well worth it.

Our last activity was to climb 365 steps to the top of a former volcano at Bartolomé. This gave us a great view of the surrounding area.

Another full day of exploring. It’s exhausting and breathtaking (in the good way) at the same time.
